Fire call to Post plant proves minor

VERNON TOWNSHIP — A fire call to the Post Consumer Brands LLC pet food manufacturing facility Thursday evening proved largely uneventful, according to Chief John Fuller of Vernon Central Hose Co.

“It sounded a lot more impressive on the dispatch than what it actually was,” Fuller said Friday. “We pulled down in there, and what little bit of fire there was — it wasn’t much of anything — had been put out with a fire extinguisher. It wasn’t anything to get too excited about.”

The fire, which was reported at approximately 9:10 p.m., involved an overheated portable air compressor, according to Fuller.

Post employees suppressed much of the fire and firefighter completed the job after running a small hand line upon arrival at the Mill Street plant located between Pennsylvania Avenue and French Creek.

“It took more water to fill the hose than we actually used on it,” Fuller said, emphasizing the minor nature of the fire.

No one was injured in the incident and there was no damage to a nearby plant building, Fuller said.

Firefighters remained on the scene for about 20 minutes, Fuller said. Meadville Central Fire Department also responded to the scene.
