In anticipation of severe weather rolling through Memphis and the Mid-South, some school districts have decided to dismiss school early.
"This is a rare, high-impact, and potentially devastating event," The National Weather Service Memphis office said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. "Heavy rainfall will likely lead to widespread river, flash, and areal flooding that could cause severe disruptions especially along and north of I-40."
The Memphis area will experience a level 5 category of severe weather on Wednesday evening, the highest level there is. The most severe weather is expected to hit between 4 and 10 p.m.
Between Wednesday afternoon and Sunday morning, Memphis is expected to see between 8 and 10 inches of rain.
Millington Municipal School District and Collierville Schools announced early dismissal on Tuesday in anticipation of the rough storms. Lakeland was the next to call off on Wednesday afternoon.

Bartlett City Schools
Bartlett City Schools has not announced any closures or canceled after-school activities as of 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Collierville Schools
Collierville Schools will close all campuses by 5 p.m. All games, practices, clubs, and Y-Care on campuses must end by then.
DeSoto County Schools
DeSoto County Schools has not announced any closures or canceled after-school activities as of 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Germantown Municipal School District
Germantown Municipal School District has not announced any closures or canceled after-school activities as of 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Lakeland Schools
Lakeland Schools has canceled all after-school activities, including after-school care, which will conclude at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Memphis-Shelby County Schools
Memphis-Shelby County Schools has not announced any closures or canceled after-school activities as of 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Millington Municipal Schools
Millington Municipal Schools will close early Wednesday with the following dismissal times:
Millington Central Middle High School: Dismissal at 1 p.m.
Millington Intermediate School: Dismissal at 2 p.m.
Millington Primary School: Dismissal at 2:15 p.m.
Christian Brothers University
Christian Brothers University has not announced any closures as of 1 p.m. Wednesday.
University of Tennessee Health Science Center
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center has not announced any closures as of 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Rhodes College
Rhodes College has not announced any closures as of 1 p.m. Wednesday.
University of Memphis
