The last known exposure happened on March 12, according to school officials.
OXON HILL, Md. — There is another confirmed case of measles in Prince George's County. County officials say this case was confirmed at John Hanson Montessori School in Oxon Hill.
According to school officials, the last known exposure on campus occurred on March 12. Due to privacy laws, additional details about the individual who tested positive are not available.
News of this case comes after two Prince George's County residents tested positive for measles after traveling abroad.
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection. For individuals who have received the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine, the risk of contracting it is extremely low. However, unvaccinated individuals face a significantly higher risk of infection and complications.
Maryland medical officials have asked anyone without the MMR vaccine, who believes that they might have been exposed to call a doctor immediately.
Adults born before 1957 are also not at risk of contracting measles, regardless of vaccination status, as most people older than 68 had already contracted the virus before the vaccine was developed.
The State Department of Health also asked those who believe they may have been exposed to watch out for symptoms for 21 days after the date of the potential exposure.
Prince George's County Public Schools Superintendent Millard House II wrote in a letter to parents that the health and safety of students is a top priority.
"While measles is a serious concern, it is not the only health risk we are currently facing," House wrote. "We remain in the midst of flu season, and as you may be aware, our community has recently experienced two flu-related deaths. This serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of protecting our health and taking steps to prevent the spread of illness."
