Robert Scofield surrendered after an hours-long standoff outside the CIA.
MCLEAN, Va. — The man arrested outside the Central Intelligence Agency on Wednesday shot at the headquarters several times, a new affidavit alleges.
Robert Scofield was arrested Wednesday after an hours-long standoff outside the CIA facility in Langley, Virginia. Now new details are emerging from his court documents.
According to an affidavit, Scofield fired multiple shots toward the building, before stopping and sitting down on a CIA memorial bench near the gates. Then, Scofield pointed the handgun at his own head, the documents say.
On Wednesday, law enforcement responded to the scene after reports of an armed man experiencing a mental health crisis just outside CIA headquarters.
Over the next at least four hours, police negotiators spoke with Scofield, until he surrendered. Scofield, who is 28 this year, lives in Lyons, Oregon. He told police his name and that he was on probation and was not supposed to have left Oregon. Finally, he told police he would surrender after smoking his last cigarette, which he did.
Scofield has two previous charges; he was first convicted of manufacturing, delivering or possessing with intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance, a Class B felony, in December 2023 in Washington state. Then, this past January, he was charged in Oregon with being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Now, he has been charged again with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition — this time in federal court in Virginia.
He will have a detention hearing on Monday at 2 p.m.
