The Wicked soundtrack on vinyl, which released in tandem with the film on last November, is back on the charts following Cynthia Erivo’s gravity-defying performance (sorry), alongside Ariana Grande, at the Oscars on Sunday night.
The soundtrack is available in various formats including CD, double vinyl, double picture disc, and digital. Target and Barnes & Noble also offer exclusive editions including split pink and green vinyl, plus an alternative cover.
The soundtrack includes renditions of the musical’s notable songs, including “Popular” and “Defying Gravity,” as performed by Erivo and Grande who star as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, in a tale that follows their unlikely friendship.
The film is based on Gregory Maguire’s novel that inspired the musical, which featured an original score from Stephen Schwartz. The cast also includes Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University headmaster Madame Morrible, Ethan Slater as Boq and Bowen Yang as Pfannee.
Universal’s highly anticipated musical adaptation was a major box office hit, grossing $263 million domestically and $360 million after 10 days in theaters. Alongside “Gladiator II” and “Moana 2,” the film helped fuel the biggest Thanksgiving box office bounty on record. Despite racking up 10 Oscar nominations, the musical only received two awards on Sunday night (costume design and production design), and no trophies for its two huge stars, marking a trend of blockbuster films becoming less favorable within the Academy.
The project is a two-part phenomenon with the second installment coming Nov. 2025. Jon M. Chu, the filmmaker behind “In the Heights” and “Crazy Rich Asians,” is the director of both films.
