Several residents in the Southport and Oak Island area captured a waterspout on video Monday afternoon.

The waterspout was part of an approaching thunderstorm. Videos and photos showed the funnel cloud twisting above the Cape Fear River just off Southport's waterfront.

A post on the Southport Police Department's Facebook page said the department had received multiple calls about the funnel cloud, and no damages or landfall were reported.

"The funnel cloud remained over the river dissipating over Battery Island," the post stated.

Monday's waterspout followed a system that brought severe storms, including a confirmed tornado, to the area Sunday night.

According to Steve Pfaff, meteorologist for the NWS, the tornado had a wind speed of 95 miles per hour and touched down at around 7:25 p.m. about four miles east of Currie.

Sunday night's storm system also brought intense lightning that is believed to have started a boat fire in Hampstead. While no injuries were reported, the boat has been deemed a total loss.
