Between July 2023 and July 2024, Spartanburg's metropolitan area population grew 2.7%.

This makes it the 10th fastest growing metro area in the nation for the second consecutive year, according to data from the U.S. Bureau Census.

The area, which includes both Spartanburg and Union counties, is also the second fastest growing metro area in South Carolina.

Greenville County gained 11,049 residents between 2023 and 2024 ― the most residents gained in an Upstate county during that time period. Spartanburg County was second, gaining 10,566 residents. In 2024, the Upstate gained around 29,843 residents in total.

Which Upstate county lost the most residents in 2024?

According to Census estimates, Union County lost 73 residents last year, making it the Upstate county to lose the most people.
