Severe weather causes ‘major damage’ to building at CVG, peels back roofs in Rising Sun

Severe weather caused “major damage” to a building under construction at the Tri-State’s regional airport and peeled back roofs on homes in southeastern Indiana, where a barn also was destroyed, officials say.

A cold front brought gusty winds, rain and storms Wednesday night, according to the FOX19 NOW Weather Team.

The building damaged at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is on the north end of the airport property, off a cell phone parking lot where drivers pick travelers up once their flights arrive, said CVG spokeswoman Mindy Kershner. Once complete, the facility is planned to be used for cargo processing.

“Severe weather that came through the area overnight caused damage to a building under construction on airport property. No one was injured,” she said early Thursday, confirming that it sustained “major damage.”

southeastern Indiana, roofs were peeled back on two homes in Ohio County, a dispatcher tells FOX19 NOW.

One is located in the 1000 block of Main Street in Rising Sun and the other is further out in the county in the 4100 block of State Route 262, where their barn also was “destroyed,” he said.

No injuries were reported, but the American Red Cross was called to assist the family on State Route 262.

It’s not clear yet if this damage - and trees “down all over” the county - is all from straight-line winds or a small tornado., according to Ohio county dispatchers. “We won’t know until we can see it when it’s light,” he said before dawn Thursday. “I’m sure we’ll get more storm damage reports once it’s daylight and people start waking up.”

In Switzerland County, 122 Southeastern REMC customers are without power, according to the utility’s website.Four power lines are down on Fairview Road in Vevay, closing it from Nelle Road to Highline Road, a Switzerland County dispatcher said. A tree also is down on Springranch Road, she added.More than 1,000 Duke Energy customers in Switzerland County were reported to be without power Thursday, and Duke's website estimates power will be restored by 5 p.m. Thursday.

Hamilton County still has scattered outages Thursday, most if not all from storms late Wednesday that took down trees all over Hamilton County and especially in Colerain Township, according to the utility’s website and county dispatch.

In Northern Kentucky, more than 200 Duke Energy customers were without power in Ludlow. Multiple trees are down in Ludlow on Poplar Street and Davies Street, the National Weather Service in Wilmington reports.

There also are reports of trees down on East Bend Road in Burlington, according to the weather service.

The weather service said they do not have widespread reports of storm damage and haven’t decided yet if they will do on-scene surveys later.

“Once additional reports of storm damage come in after daylight, if they do, we will coordinate with local emergency management agencies and go from there.”
