Seven pedestrians hospitalized after driver crashes onto sidewalk on U Street; MPD says impaired driving may have contributed.

WASHINGTON — Seven people were hospitalized early Saturday morning after a driver crashed onto the sidewalk in Northwest D.C., striking multiple pedestrians, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

The crash happened just after 1:15 a.m. near the intersection of U Street and 11th Street NW. Police said a vehicle traveling east on U Street left the roadway and drove onto the sidewalk, hitting several people.

Emergency responders transported seven adults to nearby hospitals. All were reported to be conscious and breathing at the time, their injuries were not life-threatening.

The driver remained on scene and was taken into custody. Police said impaired driving is believed to have played a role in the crash.

U Street was closed between 10th and 12th streets NW while the department’s Major Crash Unit investigated. Officials have not released any additional details about the driver or the specific circumstances leading up to the collision.
