The tanker is leaking gasoline into Difficult Run River, the fire department says.

GREAT FALLS, Va. — Residents living along Difficult Run River may smell gas for days, police say, after a tanker truck crashed into a bridge Thursday morning, causing a fuel spill.

The truck crashed on Leigh Mill Road near the intersection at Kelso Road in Great Falls around 4:30 a.m. Now, officials say the tanker truck is leaking gasoline into the river. Hazmat is on the scene working to the clean up the spill, and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue says the clean up will take some time.

Leigh Mill Road is closed in both directions between Georgetown Pike (Route 193) and Towlston Road for the emergency response.

Fairfax Fire and Rescue has offered the following alternative routes to avoid the closures this morning:

  • Leigh Mill Road at White Chimney Lane to Leigh Mill Court
  • Old Dominion Road between Towlston and Falls Run roads
  • Kelso Road from Leigh Mill Road to Brian Jack Lane

The cleanup is ongoing. WUSA9 will update this story as more information comes into our newsroom.
