Hill Country Barbecue in D.C. will close on Friday after 15 years of service.

WASHINGTON — After nearly 15 years of service, Hill Country Barbecue in D.C. is closing its doors for the last time on Friday. It’s no surprise that the announcement has left many fans of this spot feeling like they’ve just been hit with a BBQ-brisket-flavored punch to the gut.

In a heartfelt message posted to their customers, Hill Country’s team shared that despite their best efforts to extend their lease at 410 7th Street, the landlord has decided to end it. And while it’s the end of an era for Penn Quarter’s go-to spot for Central Texas-style barbecue, it’s not the end of the Hill Country team’s journey. They’ve promised to continue dishing out the good stuff at their New York City location and are leaving the door open for a potential return to D.C. down the line.

With its lively atmosphere, delicious meats and a basement that played host to rowdy “Firehouse Fridays” line dancing parties, Hill Country became a staple of the D.C. nightlife scene, Reddit users say.

The shift from BBQ to bitcoin, however, might be a tough pill for some to swallow. Pubkey Bar and Media House, an NYC-based operation is allegedly taking over the space. Their website promises to "foster local and global connections through dynamic spaces, creative media, and engaging experiences." The jury’s still out on what exactly that means, but the vibe is definitely a far cry from a plate of brisket and a cold Shiner Bock.

Some are scratching their heads at the transition, questioning if this trendy crypto-centric space will ever live up to the spirit of Hill Country’s down-home charm. Others think the spot might’ve done better in a more tourist-heavy area. One thing’s for sure: Pubkey’s got some mighty big boots to fill.

So, if you want to get in one last plate of Texas-style goodness before the doors close, make sure to swing by this week.
