A special weather statement for a strong thunderstorm was issued in southcentral Pennsylvania for late Sunday evening as powerful thunderstorms moved through the region.

According to the statement issued by the National Weather Service in State College at 9:16 p.m. on Sunday evening, March 16, 2025, a powerful thunderstorm with the potential for damaging winds and hail was expected to impact York County, and a small portion of Adams County

A severe storm was moving northeast towards Hanover out of Frederick County, Maryland on Sunday evening with wind gusts up to 50 miles-per-hour and pea-sized hail, according to the weather service.

The storm warning expires around 9:45 p.m., the service said.

The weather statement was issued for areas including Hanover, York, Spring Grove, Dallastown, Glen Rock, Loganville and Red Lion.

Additional storms are possible through the early hours of Monday, according to forecasts.

Winds this strong are able to break off large branches or knock over trees, which can result in property damage and injuries.

Scattered power outages were reported by Adams Electric and Met-Ed around York and Adams counties Sunday.

The same line of storms has led to several tornado warnings in western and northern Pa. on Sunday afternoon, according to the weather service.

What you can do during severe weather:

  • View forecasts and warnings from the National Weather Service in State College: www.weather.gov/ctp/.

  • If you are inside: Stay away from windows, ideally stay in an interior room without windows on the lowest level, or basement, for the duration of any severe weather event.

  • If you are outside: Go inside immediately when severe storms are approaching. Sheds and tents are not safe during severe weather. Taking shelter under trees is not safe, as the tree may fall or lightning may strike.

  • If you are in a vehicle: Avoid being underneath trees which may fall. While vehicles are safer than being outside, make an effort to find a secure place to take shelter.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
