Highway 99 sees another pedestrian crash in Eugene as safety concerns grow

5 hours ago 1

One person was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries Monday after being hit by a vehicle on Highway 99 between Roosevelt Boulevard and Royal Avenue, according to Eugene police.

Just after 10:30 p.m., police advised the public to avoid the area due to the crash. Highway 99 was closed for several hours while EPD's Major Collision Investigations Team conducted an on-scene investigation.

As of Tuesday morning, it was unclear when the roadway would reopen.

According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, at least three fatal vehicle-pedestrian crashes have occurred on Highway 99 between Roosevelt Boulevard and Royal Avenue within the last year. On Feb. 10, a man in his 70s was hit by a car after attempting to cross Highway 99. He died at the scene. In 2024, a 44-year-old woman was killed while crossing the roadway. A 73-year-old man was killed just a few months later after he was struck by a vehicle pulling a trailer.

The incident is also the fourth vehicle-pedestrian crash reported in Eugene in 2025. In early January, two individuals died after they were struck by vehicles at two separate intersections along West 11th Avenue.
