Election Day in Milwaukee will be cloudy and dry, with rain, snow and storms overnight

Weather is expected to be cloudy but dry across Wisconsin for Election Day on Tuesday until the evening. Then, rain and snow are in the forecast, with some areas of the state under Winter Weather Advisories.

The good news is that the worst of the weather should hold off until just about poll-closing time at 8 p.m.

In the Milwaukee area, a high of around 38 degrees is in the forecast, with clouds and southeast winds increasing throughout the afternoon and evening. Winds will make things feel like 30 degrees.

Snow or a rain-snow mix is likely in Milwaukee and across southern Wisconsin after 7 p.m. Winds will increase from 10 to 15 mph to 20 to 25 mph after midnight, the National Weather Service says. Wind gusts could be as high as 40 mph. Little to no snow accumulation is expected in the Milwaukee area.

"North of the I-94 corridor, it will be predominantly snow, and we're expecting that snow to last through the overnight hours," said Milwaukee-Sullivan NWS meteorologist Taylor Patterson. "For southern Wisconsin, we'll see that snow transition over to completely rain around 1 a.m."

Multiple periods of severe weather are possible on Wednesday in southern Wisconsin. A 100% chance of rain is in the forecast for Milwaukee between about 4 a.m. and noon, with chances of rain and thunderstorms until around 7 p.m.

Between 4 and 9 a.m., a morning round of storms is expected to primarily affect southwestern Wisconsin, Patterson said. A potential second round between about noon and 7 p.m. is expected to have greater effects on the southeastern portion of the state.

"The main concerns for that will be winds and hail," Patterson said. "You can't rule out a brief tornado or two." Morning wind gusts could be as high as 40 mph.

Northern Wisconsin is under a Winter Weather Advisory

The majority of central and northern Wisconsin is under a Winter Weather Advisory from Tuesday evening until Wednesday morning.

Communities in central and northeastern Wisconsin, including Marinette, Shawano and Rhinelander, are expected to see 2-4 inches of snow. Some areas further south, including Stevens Point and Door County, are expected to see 1-3 inches.

Far northwestern Wisconsin, including Ashland, Hayward and Spooner, could see up to 6 inches of snow. Bayfield and Douglas counties are under a Winter Storm Warning from 7 p.m. on Tuesday through 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
