Digital Cinema Tech Firm CineCert Acquires Clipster Mastering System

With a month to go before the start of the annual NAB Show, digital cinema tech developer CineCert has acquired the widely-used Clipster digital cinema mastering system from German manufacturer Rohde & Schwarz. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

CineCert, which is also a compliance test lab for studio consortium Digital Cinema Initiatives, makes digital cinema tools including the Wailua cloud and on-prem mastering system and Waimea key distribution server.

Many studios and postproduction houses uses Clipster and well as these tools, and so CineCert’s goal is to continue to develop Clipster while integrating it more tightly with CineCert tools for a more streamlined workflow. CineCert will also take over Clipster customer support.

“For more than 20 years, Clipster has set the standard for digital motion picture finishing. First from DVS and then Rohde & Schwarz, Clipster has remained the benchmark for quality cinema mastering and we are excited at the opportunity to make it even better,” said John Hurst, CTO of CineCert. “We will be on a dual track of new feature development and the continuation of a great tradition of reliable and timely professional support. In addition, the integration of CineCert’s existing products and code base with Clipster will provide users with streamlined workflows and enhanced opportunities in areas such as automation, asset management and key distribution.”

Noting that Rohde & Schwarz’s current focus in on broadcasting innovation, its vice president of media Thorsten Sauer said, “As we transfer the product over to CineCert, we want to assure our customers that their needs remain top priority and the product has a bright future in the portfolio of an expert in the field like CineCert.”

CineCert plans to meet with customers next month at the NAB Show, which begins April 5 in Las Vegas.
