Apr. 3—MITCHELL — The intersection of North Main Street and the South Dakota Highway 37 bypass will be closed for two weeks in April, the South Dakota Department of Transportation said.
Beginning on Monday, April 14, traffic on State Highway 37 will be detoured onto Minnesota Street and 23rd Avenue, north of Mitchell. The SDDOT said the planned detour will be in effect for two weeks to allow for the completion of construction work at the Highway 37 bypass and Main Street junction.
"While the Minnesota Street intersection will be modified to accommodate turning traffic during this planned detour, truck traffic should consider using an alternate route," a SDDOT press release said.
Motorists should be prepared for delays and a 12-foot width restriction through this area. Drivers are asked to be aware of construction workers, equipment, and to slow down through the work zone.
The construction work is part of a larger, two-year project to reconstruct Highway 37 in Mitchell from Main Street to National Guard Road. The project includes regrading North Main/Highway 37 with new concrete and asphalt surfacing, reconstruction of the Lake Mitchell Spillway bridge and the construction of a new shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists to access Lake Mitchell and Kibbee Park.
In 2024, construction workers completed the Highway 37 northbound lanes north of the Mitchell water plant, as well as southbound lanes north of the bridge. Construction work for 2025 resumed south of the spillway bridge to the Main Street/Highway 37 bypass. Traffic in 2025 will be shifted to the northbound lanes during the closure of the southbound lanes, and speed limits will be reduced to 30 mph.
The prime contractor on this $32.3 million project is Michels Road and Stone, of Brownsville, Wisconsin. The overall project completion date is November 2025.
