Barberton police arrested a 49-year-old man Tuesday night after his threats to blow up a residence led to an hours-long standoff with SWAT, according to a release.

Officers responded to reports of a domestic dispute at a residence in the 400 block of 15th Street Northwest at about 5:16 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered the male suspect acting "erratically" and found the neighborhood to have a strong smell of natural gas. The man reportedly told officers he cut the gas line in the house, threatening to blow it up.

Officers subsequently secured the home and evacuated neighboring residences, according to officials. An Enbridge technician was dispatched to the residence, where they turned off the gas to the home. Barberton SWAT eventually arrived at the scene as police officers were continuing to talk with the suspect who continued to threaten violence to himself and others, police said.

Officers were able to get the man to exit the home after two hours of negotiating. He was taken into custody without incident, and transported to Summa Barberton Hospital after being treated on the scene for medical issues.

Residents were informed it was safe to return home and local roads were opened back up after the Barberton Fire Department made sure the scene was safe at about 7:50 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation.
