Susan Crawford's win over Brad Schimel for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court has led to national political figures offering their congratulations.
Former President Barack Obama and progressive U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders were two who took to social media Tuesday night shortly after the race was called to celebrate Crawford's victory.
Obama endorsed Crawford shortly after President Donald Trump backed conservative Schimel in a race that got national attention and broke spending records.
"Congratulations to Judge Susan Crawford on her victory, and to the people of Wisconsin for electing a judge who believes in the rule of law and protecting our freedoms," Obama tweeted Tuesday night.
Bernie Sanders congratulates Susan Crawford, references that her victory defeats Elon Musk
Bernie Sanders, the Vermont senator and former progressive presidential candidate, referenced how Crawford's victory was a win over not just Schimel but also Elon Musk, who made himself one of the central figures in the race.
Musk and his political groups poured in $20 million in the race, backing Schimel. He also led a rally in Green Bay on Sunday where he gave away two $1 million checks, a move that led to Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul suing Musk for trying to buy votes and others questioning the legality of it. Musk also gave away another $1 million check to a Green Bay man through his political action group days earlier.
Musk, who has become one of Trump's closest ally as he has headed the president's Department of Government Efficiency, is the richest man in the world.
"Congratulations Wisconsin on electing Susan Crawford," Sanders wrote on X. "As a result of your strong grassroots organizing, you have defeated the wealthiest person on earth.
"You have set an example for the rest of the country. We can do it."
