Nostalgia and Nature: 'X-Men '97,' New 'Descendants' Movie, and Sharkfest Headline Disney Plus in July 2026

Disney Plus is gearing up for a blockbuster summer month this July 2026, anchoring its streaming lineup with a diverse mix of nostalgic animation, musical fantasy, and high-octane nature programming. Headlining the platform's mid-summer slate is the highly anticipated continuation of X-Men '97, alongside a brand-new feature-length entry in the fan-favorite Descendants franchise. This curated balance of legacy Marvel properties and Disney Channel-style musical adventures aims to capture both millennial nostalgia and younger demographic viewership during the peak summer vacation season.

The return of X-Men '97 follows the massive critical and commercial success of its initial revival seasons, which resurrected the beloved 1990s animated series with modern animation techniques and mature, complex storytelling. Meanwhile, the new Descendants film expands on the lore of Disney's classic heroes and villains, bringing fresh musical numbers and high-stakes magical drama to a dedicated fanbase. "Our goal for the summer of 2026 is to deliver programming that bridges generations," noted a Disney streaming representative in an industry press briefing. "Whether it’s the serialized drama of the mutant struggle or the high-energy performance of our newest Descendants cast, we are prioritizing high-impact franchise expansions."

In addition to these scripted narrative powerhouses, July 2026 also marks the return of National Geographic’s annual Sharkfest. This year’s lineup features a comprehensive roster of underwater programming, offering viewers a deep dive into marine biology, apex predator behaviors, and stunning cinematography. Positioned as a key pillar of Disney's unscripted summer strategy, Sharkfest remains a reliable tentpole for Disney Plus, drawing in science enthusiasts and families alike with its mix of educational thrillers and documentary series.
