WhatsApp Set to Introduce Usernames, Offering Users a Shield for Phone Number Privacy

In a significant shift toward user privacy, Meta-owned messaging giant WhatsApp is preparing to launch a feature that will allow users to reserve unique usernames. According to reports first surfaced by CNET, this upcoming update will enable users to communicate with others without disclosing their personal phone numbers. This move addresses a long-standing privacy pain point on the platform, where initiating any conversation historically required sharing a highly sensitive piece of personal data. Once the feature is fully deployed, users will be able to establish a public-facing handle, effectively decoupling their personal identity from their telecommunications credentials for new interactions.

Since its inception in 2009, WhatsApp has relied on phone numbers as the primary identifier for account creation and contact discovery. While this architecture simplified onboarding and synced seamlessly with address books, it increasingly clashed with modern digital privacy standards. Competitors like Telegram, Discord, and more recently, the privacy-focused app Signal, have long utilized usernames or custom PINs to allow interaction without exposing phone numbers. By adopting a similar username-based framework, WhatsApp is aligning itself with contemporary digital lifestyle expectations, where users demand greater control over who has access to their direct contact information.

Industry analysts view this update as a crucial step forward in combating spam, harassment, and identity theft. "Forcing users to share phone numbers just to coordinate a marketplace purchase or join a local community group was a major privacy loophole," says digital security researcher Marcus Vance. "An optional username system gives users a necessary buffer." Under the anticipated system, users will be able to navigate to their profile settings to claim a unique username. Once established, new contacts can search for and message them using this handle, while the underlying phone number remains hidden by default.

While Meta has not officially announced a firm global release date, the feature has been spotted in various beta builds of the app for Android, iOS, and web platforms. The transition is expected to roll out in phases to prevent impersonation and resolve conflicts over highly coveted handles.

Key Benefits of the Upcoming Feature:

  • Enhanced Anonymity: Connect with businesses, casual acquaintances, or online communities without revealing your personal phone number.
  • Reduced Spam and Harvesting: Prevent malicious actors from scraping phone numbers from large group chats.
  • Simplified Networking: Share a simple, memorable handle rather than a country-coded phone number.
