Vertiv Expands AI Liquid Cooling Capabilities Through Strategic Initiatives with ThermoKey and Strategic Thermal Labs
Vertiv (NYSE: VRT), a global leader in critical digital infrastructure and continuity solutions, has announced a significant expansion of its liquid cooling portfolio aimed at meeting the intensifying thermal demands of artificial intelligence (AI) workloads. Through a combination of strategic collaborations and technology integration with European heat-exchanger specialist ThermoKey and Austin-based Strategic Thermal Labs (STL), Vertiv is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the rapidly growing high-density data center market. The moves underscore a broader industry pivot toward advanced liquid cooling systems as traditional air-cooling methods reach their physical limits under the strain of next-generation GPU deployments.
The partnership with ThermoKey enhances Vertiv’s manufacturing and engineering capacity for customized heat exchangers, dry coolers, and chillers, which are critical components of closed-loop liquid cooling systems. Simultaneously, the integration of technology and expertise from Strategic Thermal Labs—an engineering firm highly regarded for its advanced liquid-to-chip cooling architectures—allows Vertiv to offer more efficient direct-to-chip solutions. These technologies are vital for cooling modern high-performance computing (HPC) clusters, such as those utilizing NVIDIA’s latest Blackwell chips, which can demand upwards of 120 kilowatts per rack.
"The acceleration of generative AI requires a fundamental redesign of data center thermal management," said Giordano Albertazzi, Chief Executive Officer of Vertiv, in a statement reflecting the company's aggressive expansion strategy. "By deepening our relationships with pioneers like ThermoKey and Strategic Thermal Labs, we are not only expanding our global supply chain but also accelerating the delivery of highly efficient, scalable liquid cooling ecosystems that our hyperscale customers require." Wall Street has reacted favorably to Vertiv’s proactive positioning; the company's stock has seen remarkable growth over the past fiscal year, driven by its status as a primary beneficiary of the AI infrastructure boom.
Industry analysts project that the global data center liquid cooling market will surpass $12 billion by 2030, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 24%. Vertiv’s dual-pronged expansion addresses two critical pressure points currently facing the industry:
- Supply Chain Resilience: Leveraging ThermoKey’s European manufacturing footprint to mitigate bottleneck risks for critical heat-transfer components.
- Technological Innovation: Applying STL’s proprietary direct-to-chip designs to minimize fluid flow resistance and maximize thermal transfer efficiency.
As hyperscalers and co-location providers race to build out AI-ready facilities, Vertiv's latest initiatives solidify its role as a foundational architect of the next-generation digital economy.
