New Order Co-Founders Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert to Miss Upcoming Chile Performance Due to Health Reasons

In an unexpected update for electronic rock and post-punk fans, British music legends New Order have announced that two of their core founding members, drummer Stephen Morris and keyboardist/guitarist Gillian Gilbert, will not be performing at the upcoming Primavera Festival in Chile this November. The band shared the news via social media, citing "personal health reasons" as the driving cause behind the sudden lineup change.

"Circumstances make it impossible," the band wrote in a brief statement posted to their official Instagram account on Monday, expressing regret over the situation. The announcement leaves frontman and guitarist Bernard Sumner as the sole original member of the seminal Manchester group scheduled to take the stage in Santiago.

This development marks a significant shift for the band's live dynamics. Morris and Gilbert, who are married, have been central to the band's signature fusion of post-punk energy and synth-pop rhythm since its inception. Morris’s precise, machine-like drumming was a foundational element of Joy Division before transitioning into New Order following the death of frontman Ian Curtis in 1980. Gilbert joined shortly thereafter, contributing the melodic keyboard lines that defined massive hits like "Blue Monday" and "Bizarre Love Triangle." Gilbert had previously taken a decade-long hiatus from touring starting in 2001 to care for the couple's children, returning to the lineup full-time in 2011.

Implications for the Primavera Lineup

While the band has not yet announced who will fill in for Morris and Gilbert at the Chilean festival, New Order's touring roster has long relied on a stable group of seasoned musicians. The current live lineup is expected to feature:

  • Bernard Sumner – Lead vocals, guitar, keyboards (Original member)
  • Phil Cunningham – Guitars, keyboards, electronic percussion (Member since 2001)
  • Tom Chapman – Bass, keyboards (Member since 2011, succeeding original bassist Peter Hook)

With original bassist Peter Hook having acrimoniously departed the band in 2007, Sumner’s presence in Chile will carry the torch for the band's first generation. Representatives for the band have not confirmed whether the health-related absences will affect any future tour dates beyond the November appearance in South America, though fans have flooded the band’s social media channels with messages of support and well-wishes for the pioneering musicians.
