TotalEnergies Secures 10% Stake in Abu Dhabi's Bab Gas Cap Project

French energy giant TotalEnergies has finalized an agreement with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to acquire a 10% concession stake in the Bab Gas Cap development project. Located approximately 150 kilometers southwest of Abu Dhabi city, the onshore Bab field is one of the United Arab Emirates' largest producing assets. This strategic acquisition underscores TotalEnergies’ commitment to expanding its natural gas portfolio in the Middle East while strengthening its multi-decade partnership with the UAE's state-owned energy developer.

The Bab Gas Cap project is a critical component of ADNOC’s broader master plan to achieve gas self-sufficiency for the UAE and transition the nation into a net exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Developing gas caps—the natural gas pockets sitting directly above oil reservoirs—requires sophisticated extraction and pressure-management technologies. By leveraging TotalEnergies’ technical expertise, the joint venture aims to unlock substantial low-cost, lower-emission natural gas reserves, which will serve both the domestic power grid and international export markets.

"This agreement marks another significant milestone in our long-standing relationship with ADNOC and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi," said Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, in a statement regarding the transaction. "The Bab Gas Cap project aligns perfectly with our strategy to grow our natural gas production globally, particularly through highly competitive assets that feature low production costs and low greenhouse gas emissions intensity. We look forward to deploying our advanced technical capabilities to help safely and efficiently bring this vital resource to market."

From a financial perspective, the transaction solidifies TotalEnergies’ position in the low-cost producing region of the Persian Gulf, where upstream operating costs remain among the lowest globally. Analysts view the move as a highly defensive play for the French major, securing long-term, cash-generative flows as European utilities look to diversify away from Russian gas pipeline dependencies. The project is expected to begin initial production phases in the coming years, contributing steadily to TotalEnergies' net production targets while supporting the UAE’s strategic economic diversification goals under its "We the UAE 2031" vision.
