Cult Action Star Tak Sakaguchi Cast as Nemesis Opposite Iko Uwais in ‘Pendekar: Warrior’
In a major casting coup for international action cinema, Japanese cult martial arts icon Tak Sakaguchi has officially signed on to play the primary antagonist opposite Indonesian superstar Iko Uwais in the upcoming feature Pendekar: Warrior. The project marks a significant milestone in Sakaguchi’s career, representing his first major screen role outside of his native Japan. According to production insiders, principal photography is scheduled to commence in the fourth quarter of 2026, allowing the two seasoned martial artists ample preparation time to conceptualize and choreograph what is expected to be a landmark cinematic clash.
Sakaguchi first garnered global cult status with his breakout role in Ryuhei Kitamura’s genre-bending 2000 action-horror film Versus. Over the past two decades, he has established himself as one of Japan’s premier physical performers and action directors, revered for his gritty, hyper-realistic fighting style in cult hits like Re:Born and the ambitious, single-take feature Crazy Samurai: 400 vs 1. In Pendekar: Warrior, Sakaguchi will bring his signature "Zero Range Combat" tactical system into direct conflict with Uwais, who famously revolutionized modern action cinema in The Raid franchise and has since become the global ambassador for the traditional Indonesian martial art of Pencak Silat.
The title "Pendekar"—a Malay and Indonesian term traditionally referring to a master of martial arts or a heroic champion—suggests a narrative deeply rooted in regional folklore and fighting philosophies. Industry analysts view the project as a highly anticipated cross-cultural collaboration that bridges East Asian and Southeast Asian action filmmaking traditions. Production representatives have expressed immense excitement about the casting, noting that the film aims to elevate modern action choreography by seamlessly blending Indonesian Silat with Japanese tactical combat systems.
