Screen Australia Partners with Tatino Films and Publikum for New Audience-Intelligence Initiatives

In an effort to bolster the domestic and international theatrical footprint of local cinema, Screen Australia has announced the launch of two innovative, audience-focused initiatives. Partnering with prominent global film consultancies Tatino Films and Publikum, the federal funding agency has introduced the "First Cut Lab" and "Impact & Insights" programs. Operating under the umbrella of Screen Australia’s newly refreshed Market department, these initiatives are designed to equip Australian filmmakers with sophisticated editing mentorship and data-driven strategic release guidance to navigate an increasingly competitive global marketplace.

The two programs target different, yet critical, stages of a film's journey to the screen:

  • First Cut Lab: Run in collaboration with Tatino Films, this program offers bespoke editing workshops for feature films in post-production. Selected filmmaking teams will receive hands-on advice from international editing consultants and industry advisors to help them reach their film's narrative and artistic potential before locking the final cut.
  • Impact & Insights: Delivered in partnership with Danish audience-intelligence platform Publikum, this initiative utilizes advanced AI technology and anthropological research to analyze script concepts and early footage. This provides creators with deep insights into target demographics, helping them shape effective marketing and distribution strategies long before the film hits theaters.

The launch comes at a crucial juncture for the Australian film industry, which continues to navigate a challenging exhibition landscape characterized by rising distribution costs and shifting consumer habits. By integrating creative mentorship with empirical audience intelligence, Screen Australia aims to bridge the gap between artistic vision and commercial viability.

"In today’s rapidly evolving theatrical market, understanding your audience is no longer an afterthought—it must be integrated into the filmmaking process," said Deirdre Brennan, CEO of Screen Australia. "Through our partnerships with Tatino Films and Publikum, we are ensuring Australian stories not only get made, but are uniquely positioned to find their audiences and resonate deeply both at home and abroad."

These targeted programs reflect a broader shift among international screen agencies toward proactive market preparation. By offering local filmmakers access to world-class editorial expertise and cutting-edge consumer analytics, Screen Australia hopes to foster a more resilient independent film sector capable of standing out on the global festival circuit and driving stronger box office returns.
