RBC Capital Reaffirms 'Sector Perform' Rating on Regeneron Amid Eylea Market Dynamics and Pipeline Developments

Investment firm RBC Capital has maintained its "Sector Perform" rating on biotechnology giant Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: REGN), signaling a neutral outlook on the stock despite its strong underlying fundamentals. The decision reflects a balanced risk-reward profile, as Wall Street weighs Regeneron's robust oncology and immunology pipeline against upcoming patent cliffs and intensifying competition for its flagship blockbuster drugs. According to analysts, while Regeneron remains a premier large-cap biotech asset, near-term growth catalysts appear fully priced into the stock's current valuation.

A primary focal point for analysts is the performance of Eylea (aflibercept), Regeneron’s leading treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration. The drug has faced mounting pressure from lower-cost biosimilars and competing therapies. While the launch of Eylea HD (high-dose) has successfully migrated a significant portion of the patient base to a longer-lasting formulation, market erosion remains a persistent concern. Additionally, Regeneron’s blockbuster immunology drug Dupixent (dupilumab), co-developed with Sanofi, continues to exhibit exceptional growth with potential label expansions into chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the massive market success of Dupixent is widely anticipated by investors, leaving limited room for unexpected valuation upside in the near term.

Key Factors Influencing the Rating:

  • Eylea Biosimilar Threat: Ongoing patent disputes and the imminent entry of biosimilar competitors present revenue headwinds for the standard Eylea formulation.
  • Dupixent Expansion: While Dupixent's trajectory remains stellar, its commercial success is already heavily discounted into Regeneron's premium valuation.
  • Pipeline Maturation: Promising early-stage oncology pipelines, including bispecific antibodies, require more mature clinical data before significantly moving the stock.

In a note to clients, RBC Capital analysts highlighted that Regeneron’s long-term growth story remains intact, supported by one of the industry's most efficient and productive research and development engines. However, the firm suggests that patience is warranted. "Regeneron continues to execute impressively across its commercial portfolio," the report noted. "Yet, until we see greater clarity on the trajectory of Eylea HD adoption relative to biosimilar erosion, alongside definitive clinical readouts from the oncology pipeline, we believe a Sector Perform rating appropriately reflects the current risk-reward balance."
