Clash of the Titans: Ronaldo and Modrić Face Off as Portugal Meet Croatia in World Cup Last 32

EAST COAST, US — Two of European football's most enduring powerhouses are set to collide in a blockbuster FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 clash, as Portugal takes on Croatia. Scheduled for a prime-time kick-off at 7:00 PM EDT (12:00 AM BST / 9:00 AM AEST), the knockout fixture has captured the global imagination, not least because it likely represents the final World Cup chapter in the storied rivalry between legendary captains Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modrić.

The build-up to the match has been dominated by the sheer longevity of the two talismanic figures. Both now in the twilight of their incomparable careers, the former Real Madrid teammates find themselves carrying the hopes of their respective nations once more. The narrative of two veteran masters defying Father Time has sparked widespread humor and admiration alike among fans. As one supporter, Vlado, noted to the pre-match broadcast:

> "Hi Beau! So, Modric vs Ronaldo. There’s going to be a lot of old men jokes tonight, huh? Hopefully some of them won’t be inappropriate. Can we respectfully agree that this qualifies as Clash of the Titans, then? (Because, in the actual myths, the Titans are older than Zeus)."

On the pitch, the encounter promises to be a fascinating tactical battle. Portugal enters the knockout stage boasting an incredibly deep squad replete with world-class attacking talent, including Bruno Fernandes and Rafael Leão, under the tactical guidance of their coaching staff. Croatia, historically renowned for their resilience and midfield mastery, will rely on their battle-tested core to disrupt Portugal’s rhythm. The midfield battleground, marshaled by Modrić alongside Mateo Kovačić, will be crucial in neutralizing a potent Portuguese transition game.

Historically, fixtures between these two nations have been tense, closely contested affairs. Many recall their dramatic Euro 2016 Round of 16 clash, where a late extra-time goal propelled Portugal toward their eventual tournament victory. With a coveted place in the Round of 16 on the line, tonight's match is poised to be another classic installment in their rivalry. For either Ronaldo or Modrić, tonight could mark the final whistle on an extraordinary World Cup legacy, adding an emotional edge to an already high-stakes encounter.
