Outdoor Retail Giant to Close 91 Stores Amid Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Restructuring

The prominent outdoor apparel and equipment retail giant has escalated its restructuring efforts, announcing the closure of 91 retail locations nationwide as part of its ongoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. This move represents a significant acceleration of the company's footprint reduction, aimed at shedding unprofitable commercial leases and stabilizing its balance sheet. According to recent bankruptcy court filings, the closures will take effect over the coming months, accompanied by immediate store-closing liquidation sales managed by joint-venture liquidators.

The company's financial distress reflects a broader post-pandemic cooling in the outdoor gear and recreation sector. During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, outdoor retailers experienced unprecedented demand as consumers flocked to socially distanced activities. However, as consumer spending shifted back toward travel, entertainment, and services—compounded by persistent inflation squeezing discretionary income—major players in the sector have been left holding expensive, slow-moving inventory. Industry analysts point out that aggressive brick-and-mortar expansion strategies executed during the boom years of 2021 and 2022 left several retailers highly vulnerable to subsequent hikes in interest rates and commercial rents.

In a statement submitted to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, the company’s Chief Restructuring Officer emphasized that streamlining the physical store portfolio is a painful but inevitable step toward long-term viability.

> "While the decision to close these locations and part ways with our dedicated team members is incredibly difficult, it is a necessary measure to align our physical footprint with current market realities," the statement read. "By optimizing our store fleet, we can focus our resources on our high-performing locations and our digital commerce platforms."

The liquidation process is expected to begin immediately, with substantial discounts offered on premium outdoor equipment, footwear, and apparel to clear out remaining inventory. Simultaneously, the retailer is actively renegotiating the lease terms of its remaining, profitable storefronts. As the restructuring plan progresses, retail watchdogs and stakeholders are closely monitoring whether this aggressive downsizing will allow the iconic outdoor brand to successfully emerge from Chapter 11 as a leaner, more agile competitor, or if it signals deeper, systemic challenges for the wider sporting goods market.
