Norwegian Zombie Comedy ‘Grandmonster’ Snags Top Outpost Award at Fantasia’s Frontières Market

MONTREAL — The Frontières Co-Production Market, the industry centerpiece of the Fantasia International Film Festival, concluded its latest edition on July 25 by honoring Norwegian director Vegard Dahle’s zombie comedy Grandmonster with the coveted Outpost Award. The project, which generated significant buzz and laughter among industry attendees during its pitch sessions, secured the top prize at the market's closing ceremony, where six awards were presented in total. The Outpost Award provides the winning film with vital post-production services, positioning the highly anticipated genre-bender for its next stages of development.

Grandmonster follows the chaotic misadventures of an American dropout who inadvertently triggers a zombie outbreak at a secluded Norwegian nursing home. Dahle’s project taps into a rich tradition of Scandinavian horror-comedies—evoking the spirit of cult classics like Tommy Wirkola’s Dead Snow—by blending visceral practical effects with sharp, deadpan humor. "The concept of taking the quiet, sterile environment of a remote Nordic elder-care facility and turning it into a blood-soaked battleground instantly resonated with the jury," noted a Frontières representative during the presentation. "It is a fresh, internationally appealing spin on a beloved genre trope."

The Frontières market, organized in partnership with the Marché du Film - Festival de Cannes, has long been recognized as a premier global launchpad for horror, sci-fi, and fantasy cinema. Securing the market's top accolade is a major milestone for Dahle and his creative team as they look to secure international co-producers and sales agents.

"Winning this award is a massive boost for our production," Dahle remarked following the announcement. "The post-production support allows us to fully realize the ambitious, messy, and hilarious vision we have for Grandmonster. We are incredibly grateful to the Frontières jury and the Fantasia community for embracing our senior-citizen zombie apocalypse."
