Tragic Discovery: Newborn Infant Found Dead in Portable Toilet at Electric Forest Festival

ROTHBURY, Mich. — A tragic discovery cast a dark shadow over the final day of the Electric Forest music festival on Sunday, after state authorities confirmed that the body of a newborn infant was found inside a portable restroom on the event grounds.

Michigan State Police (MSP) officials reported that emergency personnel and law enforcement were dispatched to a section of the festival grounds at the Double JJ Resort in Rothbury, Michigan, after staff or attendees alerted security to the grim find. The multi-day electronic and jam band music festival, which attracts upwards of 50,000 patrons to West Michigan each summer, was in its final hours of operation when the investigation commenced.

State police detectives have assumed control of the active investigation, cordoning off the immediate area where the infant was located to preserve evidence. Authorities have not yet released details regarding the child's estimated age, gestational stage, or how long the body may have been inside the venue's facilities. An autopsy has been scheduled with the local medical examiner's office to officially determine the cause and manner of death, as well as to assist in identifying the mother.

Festival organizers expressed profound sadness over the incident, pledging their resources to assist local and state authorities.

> "We are deeply saddened by this tragic situation and are assisting the Michigan State Police in every way possible as they conduct their investigation," a festival spokesperson said in an official statement.

The incident has renewed public attention on Michigan’s Safe Delivery of Newborns law. Enacted to prevent unsafe infant abandonment, the statute allows a biological parent to safely, legally, and anonymously surrender a newborn child up to 72 hours old to an on-duty employee at any hospital, fire department, or police station, or by calling 911.

Investigators are currently reviewing security footage from the festival grounds and appealing to the public for any information. Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed anything unusual near the portable restrooms over the weekend, or who may have information regarding an attendee in physical distress, to contact the Michigan State Police Hart Post.
