NASA Partners with Advanced Space for CAPSTONE 02 Cislunar Technology Mission

In a significant step toward establishing a sustainable human presence on the Moon, NASA has announced a new spacecraft technology demonstration mission, CAPSTONE 02, in partnership with Colorado-based aerospace firm Advanced Space. Under the newly awarded contract, the mission will focus on developing and validating critical cislunar infrastructure essential for the agency’s Artemis program and the eventual deployment of a permanent Moon Base. CAPSTONE 02 will build on the legacy of its predecessor by testing orbital assets and showcasing advanced capabilities in the unique gravitational environment of the Earth-Moon system.

The upcoming mission is designed to validate highly complex operations required for deep-space exploration. Key objectives include demonstrating rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO)—which are vital for docking maneuvers in lunar orbit—and testing autonomous navigation systems that allow spacecraft to calculate their positions without relying heavily on ground-station tracking from Earth. Additionally, CAPSTONE 02 will test robust cislunar communication capabilities, ensuring reliable data transfer between orbital spacecraft, surface assets, and mission control. These technology demonstrations are critical precursors for the safe operation of the planned lunar Gateway, a small space station that will serve as a multi-purpose outpost orbiting the Moon.

This mission represents a continuation of NASA’s strategy to leverage commercial partnerships to accelerate deep-space exploration. The original CAPSTONE (Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment) mission, launched in 2022, successfully entered and characterized the Near-Rectilinear Halo Orbit (NRHO), the precise orbit planned for the Gateway.

"By collaborating with commercial partners like Advanced Space, we are rapidly maturing the technologies needed to secure our cislunar infrastructure," said a NASA representative associated with the Space Technology Mission Directorate. "CAPSTONE 02 will push the boundaries of autonomous operations, reducing the operational burden on Earth-based tracking networks and laying the groundwork for a robust, interconnected lunar ecosystem."

As NASA prepares for upcoming crewed Artemis missions, establishing a resilient infrastructure in cislunar space has become a top priority. The technologies matured by CAPSTONE 02 will not only support NASA’s immediate crewed objectives but will also benefit commercial lunar landers, robotic explorers, and international partner assets. By proving that cost-effective, small-satellite platforms can perform complex orbital maneuvers and maintain autonomous communications, NASA and its industry partners are lowering the technical and financial barriers to sustained deep-space exploration.
