JetBlue Overhauls Fare Options, Replacing Legacy 'Core' Economy Brand

JetBlue Airways is launching a sweeping overhaul of its fare structure, retiring its long-standing "Core" brand in favor of a reorganized suite of economy options. The New York-based carrier is transitioning to a more streamlined naming convention designed to simplify the booking process and clearly distinguish between budget-friendly tickets and premium, flexible economy products. This strategic shift comes as major airlines increasingly segment their cabins to capture both price-sensitive leisure travelers and high-yield corporate flyers.

The decision to phase out the "Core" terminology marks the end of an era for JetBlue, which historically marketed its main cabin as a singular, high-quality experience featuring industry-leading legroom and free Wi-Fi. Under the new framework, the airline will categorize its standard seating options under a tiered system ranging from "Blue Basic"—its restricted economy tier—to newly enhanced flexible economy options. The restructuring aims to eliminate confusion at checkout, allowing passengers to easily compare what is included in each fare class, such as seat selection, boarding priority, and ticket changeability.

"Our goal is to take the guesswork out of the booking experience while offering travelers greater control over their journey," said Dave Clark, JetBlue’s Head of Revenue and Planning, in a statement regarding the transition. "By moving away from the legacy 'Core' branding and clearly defining our basic-to-flexible spectrum, we are aligning our products with the evolving expectations of modern travelers who want to pay only for the options they value."

What Travelers Need to Know About the New Fare Tiers

To help passengers navigate the restructured booking platform, JetBlue has outlined several key changes to its standard ticket categories:

  • Blue Basic: Remains the most restrictive option, designed for budget-conscious travelers. While it now allows for a free carry-on bag (a policy updated earlier this year to better compete with legacy carriers), it does not permit free seat selection or ticket changes.
  • Standard Economy (Blue): The direct successor to the standard "Core" product. This tier includes general boarding, free seat selection, and no change or cancellation fees (excluding fare differences).
  • Flexible Economy (Blue Extra): Geared toward business travelers and those requiring maximum adaptability. This tier offers early boarding, expedited security access at select airports, and free same-day switches.

Industry analysts view this rebranding effort as a crucial component of JetBlue's broader strategy to restore profitability following its blocked merger with Spirit Airlines. By aggressively segmenting its cabin and pushing upsell opportunities, JetBlue is aiming to bolster its ancillary revenue streams. The simplified fare structure is expected to roll out across all booking channels, including the airline's website and mobile application, by the end of the current quarter.
