Locarno Film Festival to Honor American Auteur James Gray With Career Achievement Award

The Locarno Film Festival has announced that acclaimed American director and screenwriter James Gray will be honored with the prestigious Pardo alla Carriera (Career Award) at its upcoming edition. The tribute, scheduled to take place on August 9 in Switzerland, will celebrate Gray’s significant contributions to international cinema. Alongside the award ceremony, the festival will host a special screening of Gray’s latest feature film, Paper Tiger, which first debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Over a career spanning three decades, Gray has established himself as one of the most distinctive and uncompromising voices in contemporary American filmmaking. Known for his deeply felt, character-driven dramas, Gray’s filmography frequently explores themes of family legacy, class tension, and moral compromise. After making an auspicious debut at age 25 with the Venice Silver Lion-winning crime drama Little Odessa (1994), he went on to direct a series of celebrated features, including The Yards (2000), We Own the Night (2007), Two Lovers (2008), the historical epic The Lost City of Z (2016), and the autobiographical coming-of-age drama Armageddon Time (2022).

According to the festival organizers, the Pardo alla Carriera is designed to recognize filmmakers whose work has left an indelible mark on the landscape of cinema. Locarno’s artistic director, Giona A. Nazzaro, praised Gray’s unique ability to merge the classical craftsmanship of New Hollywood with a highly personal, modern sensibility. The screening of Paper Tiger—a project that has already garnered significant critical attention since its spring launch on the French Riviera—is expected to be a major highlight of the festival's outdoor programming at the iconic Piazza Grande, which hosts up to 8,000 spectators nightly.

In addition to receiving the lifetime achievement honor, Gray is scheduled to participate in a public masterclass during the festival. This session will offer audiences, critics, and emerging filmmakers a rare, in-depth look into his creative methodology, his transition from intimate indie dramas to large-scale genre pieces like the sci-fi epic Ad Astra (2019), and his perspective on the evolving state of theatrical cinema. With this tribute, Gray joins an illustrious roster of past Locarno honorees, reinforcing the festival's long-standing commitment to championing visionary directors from around the globe.
