India’s Manufacturing Growth Moderates in June Amid Softening Demand and Seasonal Headwinds

India’s manufacturing sector experienced a notable deceleration in June, marking its second-weakest growth rate since mid-2022 as domestic and international demand began to soften. According to the latest HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), compiled by S&P Global, the headline index dipped to 58.3 in June. While the figure remains comfortably above the 50-point threshold that separates expansion from contraction, the downward trajectory highlights emerging capacity constraints and cooling consumer spending across the subcontinent.

The cooling of factory activity comes after a prolonged period of stellar economic performance, during which India led major emerging markets in industrial output. Economists point to a combination of factors driving the June slowdown, including stubborn inflationary pressures on raw materials and reduced purchasing power among rural consumers. Additionally, extreme summer heatwaves across northern and central India during the month severely impacted labor productivity, disrupted logistics networks, and slowed down cargo transport, resulting in delayed delivery times for key manufacturing inputs.

"While India's manufacturing sector remains a key driver of overall economic growth, the June PMI data suggests that the furious pace of expansion seen over the last two years is starting to normalize," said Pranjul Bhandari, Chief India Economist at HSBC. "We are seeing a softer rise in new orders, which has prompted firms to scale back their hiring plans and adopt a more cautious approach to inventory management. Nonetheless, the overall health of the sector remains robust compared to global peers."

Looking ahead, industry analysts suggest that the manufacturing sector's trajectory in the coming quarters will heavily depend on the progression of the monsoon season and subsequent rural demand recovery. As the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) keeps a close eye on inflation, the moderation in factory growth may influence monetary policy decisions in the second half of the fiscal year. Manufacturers are currently focusing on streamlining supply chains and optimizing operational efficiency to navigate this phase of tempered demand.
