Google Partners with Energy Dome for Landmark 200MWh CO2 Battery Project in Ireland

Alphabet Inc.’s Google (GOOGL) has announced a landmark partnership with Italian energy storage innovator Energy Dome to deploy a massive 200-megawatt-hour (MWh) CO2 battery project in Ireland. This initiative marks a significant step forward in Google’s ambitious global commitment to operate entirely on 24/7 carbon-free energy (CFE) across all its offices and data centers by 2030. By integrating Energy Dome’s proprietary thermodynamic liquid-carbon-dioxide storage technology, the project aims to tackle the intermittent nature of Ireland's substantial wind energy resources, ensuring a continuous supply of clean power to the local grid and Google's local infrastructure.

Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries, which typically offer short-duration storage and rely on supply-chain-constrained raw materials, Energy Dome’s "CO2 Battery" utilizes a closed-loop thermodynamic process. The system compresses carbon dioxide gas into a liquid state to store surplus renewable energy generated during peak production periods. When energy demand rises, the liquid CO2 is expanded back into gas, driving a turbine to feed electricity back to the grid. Ireland, with its rapidly growing wind sector but constrained grid capacity, represents an ideal testing ground for this technology. The 200MWh facility will help mitigate the issue of wind curtailment—where clean energy is wasted because the grid cannot handle the immediate load—by storing excess power for later use.

This collaboration represents a major commercial validation for Energy Dome, which promises a significantly lower levelized cost of storage compared to lithium-ion alternatives. For Google, the project is a critical component of its broader strategy to foster deep-decarbonization technologies that can scale globally. Tech giants are increasingly leveraging private capital and utility-scale partnerships to accelerate grid decarbonization, establishing long-duration energy storage (LDES) as a cornerstone of the global transition toward stable, renewable power grids. Industry analysts expect this project to serve as a key blueprint for future corporate clean energy procurement strategies worldwide.
