Elon Musk Shares Armie Hammer’s Controversial Comeback Film ‘Citizen Vigilante’ on X

Tech billionaire Elon Musk surprised social media users on Friday by posting the controversial indie-action film Citizen Vigilante directly to his X (formerly Twitter) account. Sharing the film with his 240 million followers, Musk bypassed traditional distribution networks to spotlight the project, which stars embattled actor Armie Hammer in what has been billed as his cinematic comeback. The link to the feature film remained active on the platform for approximately 48 hours before going dark on Saturday, sparking widespread speculation regarding whether the removal was due to copyright claims, content moderation policies, or a pre-planned limited distribution window.

Directed and written by the polarizing 60-year-old German filmmaker Uwe Boll, Citizen Vigilante has already garnered significant notoriety. Boll, who is infamous for his ultra-violent cinematic style and combative relationship with mainstream film critics, reportedly saw the film banned in his native Germany due to its graphic depictions of extrajudicial violence and anti-establishment themes. The film’s narrative centers on a disillusioned citizen taking the law into his own hands—a provocative subject matter that aligns with Boll’s previous controversial works, such as the Rampage trilogy.

For lead actor Armie Hammer, the film represents a high-stakes attempt to re-enter the film industry following a highly publicized career collapse. In 2021, Hammer was dropped by his agency and publicist following severe allegations of sexual misconduct and abusive behavior, which the actor denied. After a multi-year exile from Hollywood, Hammer's casting in Boll’s low-budget indie feature was seen as a deliberate pivot toward alternative, counter-cultural cinema.

While representatives for Musk, Boll, and Hammer have not officially commented on the sudden removal of the stream, the stunt underscores X’s shifting identity under Musk’s ownership. The billionaire has frequently championed "free speech absolutism" and has previously utilized X to host and promote controversial independent documentaries and media projects. By leveraging his massive personal reach to debut Citizen Vigilante, Musk has once again highlighted the platform's potential to act as an unregulated distribution hub for blacklisted figures and censored media.
