Amazon MGM Secures First-Look Deal with 'Culpa Mía' Author Mercedes Ron
Amazon MGM Studios has formalized its highly successful relationship with bestselling young adult author Mercedes Ron, signing a comprehensive first-look deal to develop new original film and television projects. The partnership builds on the massive global success of the Spanish-language film adaptation of Ron’s novel Culpa Mía (My Fault), which premiered on Prime Video in 2023 and quickly became one of the platform's most-watched non-English language local original movies of all time.
Ron first gained prominence as a breakout writer on the social storytelling platform Wattpad, where her Culpables trilogy amassed millions of reads before being published in print by Penguin Random House. The cinematic adaptation of the trilogy's first installment, Culpa Mía, captivated international audiences with its high-stakes romantic drama, prompting Amazon to greenlight production on its highly anticipated sequels, Culpa Tuya (Your Fault) and Culpa Nuestra (Our Fault). By securing this first-look agreement, Amazon MGM Studios ensures exclusive early access to Ron's upcoming literary works and original screen concepts, capitalizing on her proven ability to engage younger demographics.
"Mercedes Ron has an extraordinary talent for connecting with young audiences through emotionally resonant and thrilling storytelling," said James Farrell, VP of International Originals at Amazon MGM Studios. "The phenomenal reception of Culpa Mía demonstrated that great stories transcend cultural and linguistic boundaries. We are thrilled to expand our collaboration with Mercedes and bring more of her compelling narratives to our global Prime Video audience."
This deal underscores a broader entertainment industry trend where streaming giants increasingly mine digital self-publishing platforms like Wattpad for established intellectual property with built-in, highly passionate fanbases. For Amazon MGM, doubling down on Spanish-language content and YA romance aligns with an ongoing strategy to diversify international portfolios and drive subscription growth in key markets across Latin America, Europe, and beyond.
