Crunchyroll Acquires ‘Kagurabachi’ Anime Series for April 2027 Release; Katsuyuki Konishi Joins Cast as Togo Shiba

Global anime streaming giant Crunchyroll has officially acquired the international streaming rights for the highly anticipated anime adaptation of Kagurabachi, ahead of its scheduled premiere in April 2027. In an exclusive report first shared by Variety, Crunchyroll confirmed it will distribute the series to audiences worldwide, excluding Asia. Alongside the acquisition news, the streamer revealed that veteran voice actor Katsuyuki Konishi has joined the Japanese voice cast as Togo Shiba, a key ally to the story's protagonist. To celebrate the announcement, a brand-new teaser trailer was unveiled, offering fans their very first look at Shiba’s animated design and setting the tone for the dark fantasy epic.

Kagurabachi, based on the breakout manga written and illustrated by Takeru Hokazono, has been a cultural phenomenon since its debut in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump in September 2023. The story follows Chihiro Rokuhira, a young man who embarks on a bloody quest for revenge against a sorcerer cartel using one of six enchanted katana forged by his late father. The manga quickly became a viral sensation online, routinely topping digital reading charts on Shueisha’s Manga Plus platform and earning critical acclaim for its cinematic paneling, fast-paced choreography, and stark, atmospheric storytelling.

The addition of Katsuyuki Konishi to the voice cast adds significant pedigree to the upcoming adaptation. Konishi, widely celebrated for his iconic roles as Tengen Uzui in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and Kamina in Gurren Lagann, brings a seasoned intensity to Togo Shiba, a powerful sorcerer and close friend of Chihiro’s father who acts as a mentor and guardian to the vengeful young protagonist. Industry analysts view Crunchyroll's early licensing of the series—nearly three years ahead of its projected broadcast—as a testament to the immense commercial viability and global demand for Hokazono's intellectual property.

With an April 2027 release window now locked in, the production cycle is expected to give the animation studio ample time to replicate the distinct, high-contrast visual style that defined the manga’s success. While additional staff and studio details remain under wraps, Crunchyroll’s aggressive acquisition strategy ensures that Kagurabachi will be positioned as a cornerstone of the global Spring 2027 anime season. Additional casting announcements and promotional materials are expected to roll out in the coming months as production gets underway.
