Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Cinema Fund Reveals 12 Recipients for 2026 Cycle

BUSAN — The Asian Cinema Fund (ACF), the cornerstone production support initiative of the Busan International Film Festival’s (BIFF) industry arm, has officially announced its 12 project selections for the upcoming 2026 cycle. Chosen from a highly competitive pool of 798 submissions, the final selections represent a diverse array of bold cinematic voices spanning seven different Asian nations. The announcement underscores the critical role the ACF continues to play in nurturing independent Asian cinema, offering essential financial, developmental, and technical support to filmmakers navigating an increasingly challenging global market.

The 12 selected projects are strategically distributed across three tailored funding streams designed to address various stages of the filmmaking process:

  • Script Development Fund (3 Projects): Targeted at promising narrative feature scripts in their early stages, providing crucial seed funding and script mentorship to transform initial concepts into market-ready screenplays.
  • Post-Production Fund (2 Projects): Offering state-of-the-art editing, sound design, and color-grading services in partnership with premier South Korean post-production facilities, aiming to ready films for the international festival circuit.
  • Asian Documentary Network (AND) Fund (7 Projects): Focusing on compelling, socially conscious non-fiction projects that document the shifting political, cultural, and environmental landscapes of Asia.

Over its multi-decade history, the ACF has served as a vital launchpad for emerging Asian directors. Past recipients have frequently gone on to secure premier spots and win accolades at major international film festivals, including Cannes, Venice, and Berlin. This year’s selection panel emphasized that the massive volume of applications—hovering near 800—reflects a thriving creative landscape despite systemic funding shortages across regional film industries.

"The quality and thematic depth of the submissions this year were truly extraordinary, reflecting both the resilience and the artistic evolution of independent filmmakers across the region," said an Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM) representative. "The 12 selected projects not only showcase immense artistic bravery but also tackle pressing contemporary issues that resonate far beyond their geographical borders. We are committed to ensuring these vital stories receive the resources necessary to reach global audiences."

By fostering international collaboration and offering concrete industry resources, BIFF’s industry market continues to solidify its reputation as Asia's premier cinematic hub. The 2026 ACF cohort is expected to participate in exclusive networking and pitching events during the upcoming festival, connecting them directly with prospective international co-producers, sales agents, and distributors.
