BMO Capital Markets Trims Outlook on Dave & Buster's Following EBITDA Shortfall
BMO Capital Markets has adjusted its financial outlook for Dave & Buster’s Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLAY) after the experiential dining and entertainment giant reported quarterly EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) that fell short of Wall Street estimates. The miss has raised questions among institutional investors regarding the resilience of consumer discretionary spending in an environment characterized by persistent inflationary pressures and elevated interest rates. Consequently, BMO analysts have dialed back their near-term growth expectations and revised their price target for the hospitality stock.
The EBITDA shortfall highlights a broader challenge facing the "eatertainment" sector, where companies must balance high-margin amusement revenues with rising food, beverage, and labor costs. While Dave & Buster’s has sought to drive foot traffic through targeted promotional campaigns and its ongoing integration of the Main Event brand, these initiatives have yet to fully offset softer organic traffic. Historically, the company's amusement division has acted as a primary engine for high profit margins, but recent data suggests that consumers are tightening their entertainment budgets, leading to lower per-capita spending inside the venues.
In a note to clients, BMO's equity research team emphasized that while the long-term strategic initiatives of Dave & Buster's—including venue remodels and digital optimization—remain promising, the near-term path to margin expansion is increasingly constrained. "We are lowering our estimates to reflect a more conservative near-term view on comparable store sales and elevated promotional spending," BMO noted. "While management's cost-efficiency program is yielding some benefits, persistent headwinds in the broader consumer discretionary space demand a more cautious valuation approach."
Looking ahead, the road to recovery for Dave & Buster's will likely hinge on the successful execution of its multi-phased remodeling rollout and its ability to capture incremental weekday traffic. Investors will be closely watching whether management's revamped marketing strategies and loyalty program enhancements can reverse traffic declines without further eroding unit-level margins. For now, Wall Street remains in a watchful holding pattern, waiting to see if the experiential retail pioneer can successfully navigate this cyclical downturn.
