‘Billy Elliot the Musical’ Announces Four Leads for West End Revival and UK Tour as Original Star Liam Mower Returns

The producers of the highly anticipated West End revival and subsequent U.K. national tour of Billy Elliot the Musical have officially unveiled the four young performers set to share the demanding title role. Noah Mannion (12, from Stockport), Rafferty Smale (12, from Leigh-on-Sea), Spencer Collins (13, from California), and William Gurney (12, from Berkshire) have been selected after an extensive international search and a rigorous audition process. The rotation of multiple actors is a long-standing tradition for the physically demanding production, which requires its young leads to master complex tap, ballet, contemporary dance, acrobatics, and dramatic acting.

Adding to the excitement of the revival is the historic return of Liam Mower, one of the three original boys who originated the role of Billy Elliot when the musical first debuted at London’s Victoria Palace Theatre in 2005. Mower, who made history as the youngest-ever recipient of the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical alongside co-stars James Lomas and George Maguire, is set to return to the production to portray "Older Billy" during the show’s iconic dream ballet sequence.

"Returning to the world of Billy Elliot feels like coming home," Mower said in a statement regarding the announcement. "To watch these incredibly talented young men prepare to take on this life-changing role is a true privilege, and I am thrilled to be able to share the stage with them and support the next generation of Billys."

Based on the acclaimed 2000 film written by Lee Hall and directed by Stephen Daldry, Billy Elliot the Musical features an award-winning score by Sir Elton John. Set in a northern English mining town during the turbulent 1984–85 miners' strike, the narrative follows a young boy who trades his boxing gloves for ballet shoes, defying social expectations and deep-seated family tensions to pursue his passion. Since its premiere, the musical has played to millions of theatergoers worldwide, winning ten Tony Awards and five Olivier Awards, solidifying its status as a modern masterpiece of British theatre.

The upcoming revival and national tour are poised to introduce the beloved story to a new generation of theatergoers while capitalizing on nostalgia for the original West End run. Rehearsals are currently underway, with the creative team focusing on adapting the staging to capture the fresh energy of its new cast. Industry analysts expect the tour to be one of the highest-grossing theatrical events of the upcoming season, demonstrating the enduring cultural relevance of Hall and John's collaboration.
