“They only lasted for this long because it was hard for her to break it off.”
It sounds like Sydney Sweeney is newly single and ready to embark on a new chapter.

Since 2018, Sydney has been dating Jonathan Davino, and in 2022, it was reported that they were engaged. Over the years, the couple have been notoriously private; however, that didn’t stop fans from picking up on a few clues that the pair may have recently parted ways.

For context, we don’t know a huge amount about Jonathan. He is 41 — more than 13 years older than Sydney — and has been described by Sydney as a “business guy” from Chicago.
In March, around the same time that reports claimed she was living in an LA hotel, it was noticed that Sydney had deleted a photograph of her and Jonathan kissing from a carousel she originally posted to Instagram on Jan. 2. As speculation about the status of their engagement bubbled up online, a source told People that their relationship had “been rocky for a long time.”

And now, we finally have some answers (kind of). On March 31, People published a subsequent report claiming that Sydney called off the wedding “because she just wants to focus on her career right now.”

Sydney is one of the busiest young stars in Hollywood. Off the back of her hit rom-com Anyone But You, which she starred in and produced, the 27-year-old has a number of big projects in the works, including two major biopics, a movie adaptation of The Housemaid, and the long-awaited third season of HBO’s Euphoria. Notably, the anonymous source said Sydney is thriving amid the chaos of her work life — and that “her relationship and her wedding” was causing her to feel “overwhelmed.”

“She didn't feel right about it,” they said, adding that “she’s not ready to settle down” in the midst of “this magical career.” “They only lasted for this long because it was hard for her to break it off. They didn't split because there is no love. They split because she just wants to focus on her career right now.”

Sydney has not directly commented on the split, although she hinted at her positive mindset on Instagram, captioning a recent post: “only up from here.” The People report seemed to echo this sentiment, saying that “she’s exactly where she wants to be” right now. “Most people would feel overwhelmed by her working schedule this year, but not Syd. She's all about working right now and very excited about all her projects,” the insider said.
The reports that Sydney and Jonathan have split come days after Sydney reunited with her Anyone But You costar Glen Powell at his sister’s wedding in Dallas over the weekend. While shooting and promoting Anyone But You in 2023, Sydney and Glen played up to online speculation that they were secretly in love — so it’s fair to say that people were very excited about the prospect of these two becoming a couple for real.

Also, plenty of people pointed out that two romantic interests being brought together by a wedding celebration is quite literally the plot of Anyone But You, which is something in itself.
And while I hate to burst anyone’s bubble, I have a feeling that Sydney probably isn’t looking to jump into anything new too soon — especially if this new People report is anything to go by. That said, I would not be opposed to Sydney and Glen becoming an iconic new power couple — talk about a fairytale love story!
We’ve reached out to Sydney’s rep and will let you know if we hear anything back. In the meantime, you can find the full People report here.
