WASHINGTON — Six people were recovering Friday night after a man went on a random stabbing spree Thursday in Northeast D.C. Police have identified the suspect as 34-year-old Kevin Steve Andrade of Southeast D.C.
In the wake of Thursday's attack, WUSA9 spoke with some of the victims, who shared their terrifying experiences. Authorities have charged Andrade with six counts of assault with intent to kill.
Some of the victims had recently returned home from the hospital on Friday. Even though there are still a lot of questions, everyone is thanking the neighborhood for coming together during a time of need.
“All I know is it could’ve been a lot worse,” stabbing victim Walter Johnson said. “I’m thankful for all my neighbors who stepped up.”
There’s a sense of resiliency in the Trinidad community, despite seeing something as traumatic as Thursday's stabbing spree. Walter Johnson was counting his blessings and giving credit to the people who helped him and five others by subduing the suspect after the attacks.
“Just got a few stitches in the back of the head but I’m fine. It could’ve been a lot worse,” Johnson said.
Johnson was recovering after he was attacked while coming home from a bus stop on Montello Avenue in Northeast.
Police said 34-year-old Kevin Steve Andrade of Southeast was facing six counts of assault with intent to kill. Police said he went on a random stabbing spree after repeatedly stabbing himself first.
“I seen this dude just walking or jogging down the street,” Johnson said. “This dude just came at me with a knife.”
He said a woman was waving him down trying to warn him, but he didn’t realize in the moment. So, he fought back immediately after.
“I blocked his blow, and I pushed him off me, and I guess I pushed myself in the process, or he pushed me,” Johnson said.
Before stabbing Johnson and others, police said Andrade allegedly stabbed a woman who was walking with him. She spoke with WUSA9 but did not want to be identified.
“He push me down on the ground. That part, I couldn’t hurry up and get up,” the woman who was attacked said.
Then she said he said something to her.
“Like if he can’t be with me nobody else could,” the woman explained. “He whipped that out and just started swinging. He stabbed me, and I was kicking him, trying to get him off me.”
Thankfully, two good Samaritans stepped in and helped take him down before police arrived. Police said those good Samaritans were also stabbed by the suspect.
“There was one neighbor who actually helped administer first aid before the ambulance even got here,” Johnson said.
Friday, neighbors, friends and family were coming together to welcome the victims as they returned home.
“I’m just happy she home and okay and get to see her kids,” one friend, who didn’t want to be identified, said.
A community rallying together and trying to move forward.
“Trying to process it all, because my face is cut,” the woman who was attacked said. “These days are crazy y'all, just keep y'all family close, be safe and stay strong out here, stay prayed up.”
The other victims—including a grandmother-- were expected to make full recoveries. We will continue to update you as we learn more.
