STEVENS POINT − A Portage County court commissioner set a $1 million cash bail Monday afternoon for a 42-year-old Amherst man arrested after a shooting Sunday in Amherst.
Justin J. Wojtalewicz faces charges of attempted first-degree intentional homicide, aggravated battery with intent to cause great bodily harm, firearm possession by a convicted felon and three counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety.
The Portage County District Attorney's Office filed the charges Tuesday prior to Wojtalewicz's appearance.
Portage County Court Commissioner Sheila Kessler set the $1 million bail during a hearing Monday and included conditions that Wojtalewicz not have any contact with the victim or a witness. She ordered Wojtalewicz to maintain absolute sobriety and surrender any firearms.
Wojtalewicz's next appearance is scheduled for April 28 in front of Portage County Circuit Judge Patricia Baker.
According to a news release issued Monday by the Portage County Sheriff's Office, at 8:07 p.m. Sunday, a caller reported a man had been shot in the village of Amherst. Deputies learned an argument broke out between Wojtalewicz and a 43-year-old Amherst man.
The argument turned into a physical fight and the 43-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound, according to the news release. The victim was transported to the Stevens Point Airport and then flown by helicopter to Wausau.
Police arrested Wojtalewicz without incident, according to the news release.
